Qi Gong (Qigong) is translated as energy work.  It has been practiced for thousands of years in ancient China and is the basis of much of the spiritual work done in temples all over Asia.  It requires the synchronization of the mind, eyes, body movements, and breath.

When properly practicing Qi Gong, we see the Sensory Motor Strip of the cortex of the brain light up on QEEG studies.  What does this mean?  It means that qigong helps coordinate the hemispheres of the brain by engaging the proprioceptive capacities of the body with the intention movement and guided breath.

I recently had the privilege of working with Mari Winsor while filming the Vitality Movie (set to release this fall).  This was just a small clip of our conversation but it illustrates a point I’d like to make here.  Whether you call it The Power House in Pilates,  the Core in functional fitness,  The Center in Dance, the Hara in Yoga, or the Dantien in Kung Fu/Qi Gong, it is all pointing to the same region of the body.  Our central pelvic area is the biomechanic pivot of our whole body.  The ancient Chinese understood this and applied it to their martial and internal arts.

Meditation- Rising Above the Noise

If you’ve tried to meditate and can’t figure out why it didn’t work for you, please read on.  Here’s the solution to your dilemma:

I often encounter mental blocks with students who are trying to learn how to meditate because their world view is jaded. People treat meditation like some sort of “chill pill”- something that helps them get through their hectic days.  This form of thinking has relegated an ancient form of deep wisdom into an inconvenient substitute for a pill.  That’s not the design and is a wholly inappropriate way dealing with one’s self.

gong

A Gong in Chinese Taoist tradition is a set amount of days one devotes to a particular task.  It is a promise to one’s self to stay focused and on path towards a designated goal.

The typical gong I like to practice with is the 100 Day GONG.  The reason for this is that it takes at least 90 days for a new habit/behavior to burn itself into our nervous system so I’ve had incredible success with this format over the years.  So what do you do during this gong? (more…)

glass lungs

Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed or afraid, you stop breathing?  It happens all of the time.  Our emotional state overtakes our energy field and we stop circulating the flow of vital energy throughout our bodies.  This locks up the coherent flow of our Vitality and entraps thoughts, emotions, disease, and toxins in our system.  We start to breathe in a shallow fashion and we feel compressed- actually we literally are.  The torroidal field of our vital energy starts to collapse and we densify- losing the flow of the Levity inducing charge that keeps us young and vibrant.   It is one of the most common ways we ail- something so simple.

Hanging out with Leonard Orr this summer, he and I discussed his form of circular breathing and how he uses prescriptions for people who come to him for a whole host of ailments.  This is very similar to what we do in my Qi Gong tradition- breath work for homework.  It is so easy yet so difficult.  Why so hard?  Because we don’t want to feel what has come up- breathing life to a thought or emotion dislodges it and moves it through our field.  If we learn to observe it with equanimity and an open heart, it simply passes and is gone.  The problem- we freak out and hang on- then the repressed charge gets so strong that we can hardly breathe.

The fix is easy- deep lower abdominal breathing for ten minutes or so and then breathe to the area of repression.

Find a track here and get to work!

energy drinks

Every day I spend in the clinic, I encounter a handful of patients who walk in with their expensive coffees.  They slap them down on the table along with their other precious valuables- their keys, wallet, etc.  Somehow it has become commonplace for everybody to be walking around with a cup of crack in our society.  It is simply assumed that the logic of “if tired, then coffee” is a foregone conclusion.  I’ve been watching it for years, brushing it off as a necessary evil of our hectic post-modern society.  Everybody is doing it so it must be tolerated- it must be OK…

It’s not.  The more I compare adrenal profiles and lab work on people, the more I see these people slipping into oblivion.  It is like America trying to solve its financial problems by getting into further debt financing. (more…)

Developing Will Power

Here you will learn how to find your personal power from the lessons of Kung Fu, and what you must do each day

Having gone through the rigors of training in Kung Fu over the years, many of the profound benefits have dawned on me at a much later date than when the lesson was first handed down.  Sure- you are told it is good for you and yes-discipline is important so you do what you’re told.  Does that teach you the underlying lessons of what’s to develop in your inner psyche?  I can’t see how it could for a young man on the front side of the experience.  Growing up is a maturation process- like the ripening of a fruit- nature will take its course and we are foolish to poke and prod too much.  Of course, we expect an apple from an apple tree but what quality?  What was the quality of the tree?  How was the rain that year?  The issue is so multi-factoral that there is always an art and a science to this practice.

The same happens in Kung Fu.  The literal translation of the term is “Hard Work” or alternatively, “Eat Bitter”.  Sounds romantic but what does it mean? (more…)

The founder of the Tao Tan Pai Lineage

Master Lu

One week has not gone by when, upon finding out I teach Qi Gong, I am asked “Is that like Tai Chi?”  The answer is- yes, kind of.  Here’s the scoop folks:

Qi Gong literally translates to “energy work”.  It is the ancient Asian practice of energy cultivation and breath work.  Known as a form of yoga, the practice of Qi Gong comes in many forms- some seated, some in deep stances, and others looking more like self massage.  There are literally thousands of traditions practicing different forms of Qi Gong out there.  Many of them come from health and healing practices while others from martial arts lineages.  Why martial arts?  Easy- let’s cultivate your internal energy, strengthen your vital flow, refine your focus, and teach you to project that power out of your palms and into that guy.  Yeah- you see it in the Kung Fu movies all the time.

What else are these Qi Gong people doing? (more…)
