Looking within

I was reading some of my esoteric doctrines on Hermetic Philosophy lately and ran into a wonderful bit on INTENTION and ATTENTION which I thought worthy of sharing.

Both words come from the Larin verb tendo which means “to stretch”. So we stretch inward or outward with our thought…

Specifically,

“Intention is the voluntary direction of the course of one’s thought toward a selected idea. Ideas are inside, not outside. Thus intention is the movement of a current of energy directed toward an interior point of awareness, an interior center of consciousness. It is a centripital motion, exactly opposite to the centrifugal motion suggested by the word attention

So we stretch inwards towards an idea- towards out internal center of consciousness…an inward spiral of energy.

“Attention is the direction of a current of energy outward toward some thing or condition in our environment. Attention has to do with location in space or time. It is our means of contact with the changing world outside”

Space or time. Time and space. Ahhh…yes the conundrum of our modern world. Time is tight and people are crowding our space. There is so much drawing our energy OUT that it is hard to look within. With the bombardment of our media and perpetual crisis after crisis, the outside world is front and center like an alley cat keeping us from our restful sleep. Everything is vying for our attention.

So which is the chicken and which the egg? Is the world chaotic because we are unsettled from within or have we been drawn away from our inner peace because the world is so distracting? No matter.

Either way the fix is easy (kind of). Directing our INTENTION inwards and making stillness the priority effectively mirrors our world of ATTENTION on the outside to us. In the end, there is no in and out. Its all just one. What we see “out there” is a reflection of our collective inner states.

The Universe came together in a single point before the Big Bang. It congealed then expanded. In Taoism, there can be no “in” without “out”. The only way we can expand is to pull in equally and that’s where the problem is. We live in an “out” culture. Even during the holidays when we are supposed to pull in and rest, we go to party after party and make appearances. We are constantly moving outward with our attention and have no time for meditation or contemplation because we’re on the roller coaster of time and space- the realm of outward attention.

So what now? Try this:

Sit with yourself for 10 minutes every morning. Take the first 5 to calm your mind by following your breath and bringing your intention inward. From here, its really important to count your blessings. We live in a world of “hungry ghosts” and we are always in danger of becoming one of them. Thinking more more more will make us happy. Take a moment to reflect on what really matters- your health, loved ones, roof over the head, and food on the table. Everything beyond our basic needs is a “want”. Not essential but cool to have. Remember this and smile.

Then, start to see your day the way you wish it to go. Feel it. Smell the smells, feel the breeze. Feel how you’d feel after getting that deal or acing that test. Find peace and create a mental map or IDEA of how the day will roll out and then go into the world. You’ll find that many things will vary but, as you get better and better at this, you’ll have much more control over how it unfolds. Be patient!

Waking up is an inside game. The hologram of the world is created within you. Have fun.

Great radio show with Lama Tantrapa- “Secrets of Qi Gong Masters “. We discussed Taoism, Buddhism, meditation, Qi Gong, movies, books, and much more. It was a fun hour and I invite you to check it out.

The idea of just sitting around seems very alien to us in the modern world. It seems boring- like a total waste of time. We’ve all got so much to do and not enough time to do it. So why sit around and waste such an already precious commodity that seems to be lacking in all of our lives? Why practice meditation at all?

Meditation is more than a technique- it is a way of life. It is a way for us to see the Universe and “hold audience” for the millions of bits of information that are passing through our minds in any given moment. We can all relate to that…noise everywhere…noise all of the time.

So how do we get rid of that noise? We don’t.

We cannot make the noise go away. It is a reflection of all of the processes of life as the nervous system is firing and communicating with the body all of the time. To stop the noise is to stop life. You’d have to go brain dead and stop your heart. Last I checked, that isn’t a leading wellness practice.

So what’s all this talk about meditation and how it helps calm us down and “stop the noise”? The answer lies in the photo you saw at the beginning of this post. Meditation is about acceptance of Reality. It is about learning to observe phenomena come and go without reacting to them. To meditate is to maintain equanimity in all affairs and to watch circumstances come and go without getting mentally and emotionally attached to them. We cannot stop our minds. (more…)

Happy holidays!

I’m just working to finalize a few parts of the new 100 Day Gong app so we can launch it in the new year. We’re almost there :)

I’ve just put together a “how to” video for you so you can fill out out Life Manifestation Workbook correctly. This is really important as it is a contract with YOURSELF so I walk you through the thing and help make it clear. Go ahead and download the Ebook and the Gong Grid before you watch the video so you can go through it with me. If you have questions, we’ll answer them in the weekly calls once the app launches. It’ll probably be in the second week of January so start thinking about what you’d like to change, work on, correct, and manifest in your life!

Here’s the video- enjoy.

Everywhere you look today, some expert is recommending meditation to people for a variety of reasons. Why? Because the world is crazy and we’re all wound up. According to the CDC, 90% of diseases today can be attributed to stress…yeah stress.

Meditation is an age-old, tried-and-true method which relieves stress…calming the body and the mind.

The questions are:

1- Why should I care?

2- Ok then so…how does it do this?

3- Why so many techniques?

4- How should I get into it?

5- How many minutes a day?

6- When will I see results?

7- Why am I having a hard time at this?

8-  Hmmmm….interesting…I actually do feel better…now what?

Well, let’s start from the top…

A couple nights ago I got off a plane from a two week trip to Europe. My wife and I had spent hours and hours walking around Paris and Amsterdam among people from all ages and walks of life. Young and old- people walked around and were moving their bodies.

Waiting for our luggage at the belt, there was a middle aged woman who came up to us and started to complain that the airport didn’t have golf cart service to bring her through the enormous terminal (maybe half a mile). She was pissed! How dare they make me walk that much!

This was the same woman we saw chain smoking in one of those “designated areas” in the previous airport. She was overweight, cranky, and, at this point, trying to enroll me in her fury. I smiled and consoled her but walked away thinking about the stark difference I’d seen in her European counterparts.

Why is it that we EXPECT people, the State, our companies, or the airports to take care of us when we have chosen to not take care of ourselves? Nobody forced those cigarettes on her. Nobody force-fed her the bad food. Yet, it is now the airport’s fault that she is tired because she is forced to do the one thing that we evolved to do best on this planet- move around. This is de-evolution in my opinion.

The socio-economic implications are also important. Her demanding a cart means the airport has to pay for it- the cart, the power, the staff, the insurance…all of it. Well, guess where the airport gets that money? US. Yeah- like any business, they either raise the airport fees or draw more tax dollars…however the heck they do it, WE are the ones having to pay that bill.

The great spiritual masters of old warned about the time we live in. It is a time of great materialism, delusional thinking, narcissistic behavior, and emotional upheaval. They called it the “Kali Yuga”- the Iron Age. It is the era where the earth is the farthest from the Galactic Center and the Source of Light and Love in our Galaxy. As we round the corner and turn back TOWARDS the center, then we emerge into an era of great awakening and enlightenment…the next Golden Age.

It is this disconnection with the Source of Light from which we come that has made the world what it is today. The Shadow is everywhere as people have lost their vision of Who they really are and have fallen into the dreary sleep of materialism. We have gotten lost and are looking for something, anything, to help us feel alive and connected again. Enter the Shadow.

We have been led to believe that it is the bright-shiny things that our culture has to offer that are our ticket out of our misery. Once we get that house, the boats, the vacations, and fly first class all the time…then…then we’ll be happy. Trust me, I work with billionaires all of the time and guess what? Most of them are miserable. Sure, they take the trips to Aspen and Monaco and hang with celebrities, but, deep down, they are ailing because they are missing something. SomeTHING? No. That’s the problem. There is no THING that can solve this problem. The answer to their problems is not a THING. It is the Source of NOTHING and EVERYTHING.

Staying on path is easy, just get out of the way and follow the leads the Universe (God, Tao, call it what you want) presents to you. The path of least resistance really shows up when we can step into the present moment and stay aware of where we stand.  The problem? TIME. Yeah time. We have memories that are tied to emotions that are unresolved which entrap us in “time“. How does this happen?

When we feel something or have a response to some stimulus that presents itself to us in the moment, we are faced with a choice. Do I accept this for what it is, not judge it, stay in the present and feel what emotion it evokes and be OK with that, OR, do I feel the emotion this stimulus brings up and say “oh, this sucks I don’t like feeling this at all…” and run away. How do we run away? Well, we move away from the emotion by trying to counter it with the opposite feeling or energy. This makes me feel sad so I’ll thing happy thoughts…OR we think to ourselves, wow that’s too much to handle right now, I’m gonna file this away and deal with it at a later time when I’m stronger, richer, better looking, and maybe 3 feet taller. Guess what folks- tomorrow has its own set of “crap” to deal with. So what happens? We keep building charge in our energy field by entrapping our power in time.

It took forever…sorry.  Big files and lots of travel but I finally was around long enough to pull this footage out and share it with the world. It needs to be shared. This man is special. He’s one of five enlightened people I’ve met on this planet. Its a privilege to have him around and it was very gracious of him to allow us to video his discourse. “If it helps people…then its OK”. He had agreed to give me an interview for the movie I’ve been working on (Vitality) after this lecture and, I was shocked to hear he was OK with us filming the lecture too. So many of these cats are caught up in their “ancient Chinese secret” and they get very weird about sharing. Not Yo Hoon.

His English is a bit hard to get at first and there are the usual annoying questions at times from a few in the crowd who keep trying to vocally answer questions he asks us to pose ourselves…but listen to this man. He gets it. At one point it looks like the cameraman fell asleep- where’s the Zen whack stick when you need it? :)

The Light is to be shared. I humbly present to you the teachings of Yo Hoon.

On this memorial day, we sit here spinning around on a globe with war all over. Some of it seems to make sense and other conflicts, well, not so clear. There’s a lot of mercenary energy out there now…lots of wars waged for corporate and political interests. There are also wars for resources…oil, ore, and water…more and more so. Some fight to survive. Some fight for what’s fair. Others- well they fight because it pays the bills.

I just recently sat and watched the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy again and remembered why I LOVE Tolkein and Peter Jackson so much. There are masterpieces out there and this is one of them…truly.

One particular line that stuck with me was from Legolas looking out on the horizon and telling Aragorn that there was a “restless malice” rising and that it would have to be met in battle.  Restless malice?  Yeah…there is evil in this world and it can’t let things be. There are people and forces on this planet that are not at ease and their inner demons drive them towards behavior that is malicious and very disturbing. Most people are good but it is this “restless malice” that is at times simmering and others boiling over (Nazi Germany) that forces the good people of the world to step up and fight for what’s right and just.
