Meditation is a way of life. The term in often used for a variety of practices and has lost meaning in many ways as many people now seek a meditation pill for their hectic lives. I’ve taught Taoist meditation for several years and have moved further away from dogma of any kind. Why? Because meditation does not require us to sit. It doesn’t require special clothing, nor does it necessarily require us to consciously breathe in any way. These are all techniques. There is nothing wrong with this approach other than the folly of mistaking techniques with actual meditation.

So what is meditation? It is letting ourselves BE the pure consciousness that we are. The practice is not technique oriented but one of letting go. We cultivate qi (chi) or breathe to a spot in the lower abdomen for years so that we can settle into our bodies and calm the mind but this personal cultivation is not the end all. We can’t learn meditation from a book or a series of workshops that teach us to focus our minds because true meditation happens OUTSIDE of the mind. We cannot come from the mind and escape it at the same time. Meditation is that place of eternity where time and space do not exist. When we allow our true nature to simply BE and let go of doing anything, we can slip into this realm of pure consciousness.

So why all of the cultivation? It is a means to an ends but should not be mistaken for what it is doing. We can breathe and feel the chi running through our bodies and we can sit and remember our essential nature through the seeds of our practice while warming our palms and sitting with the Tao.  The benefits of deep breathing are amazing but the process of unfolding has been lost in modern times. In qigong we touch the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth to connect inner circuits and focus our life energy which is great for personal healing and calming the mind. However, if people want to learn about enlightenment, it will require reflection and conscious dedication to the question of what true meditation is. You cannot get this out of a book or a Tai Chi form. You cannot practice methods or store enough chi to gain consciousness. You ARE consciousness so there is nothing to gain short of the gnosis of this very fact.

Life is an amazing journey and if we regularly remind ourselves that much of what we care to gain is actually a fantasy, we can proceed to unlearn what is inhibiting us and actually grow in awareness. The essence of Taoist practice lies in this.

Winter Solstice Checklist

Here’s a list of things you should consider for this year’s Winter Solstice:

1- Have you closed out your 2011 projects? What things do you not want to carry into 2012? What do you need to finish, schedule in, or simply drop in order to maintain your sanity? How important is it? WHY are you doing it and does it serve you/your family?

2- Have you spent time telling the people you care for that you love them? It doesn’t take long…do it now. (more…)

Here’s a compilation of studies put together that show just how horrible excessive sitting is for our health. From bio mechanical problems that lead to low back pain to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity…you can be sure that sitting around is going to catch up with you. Paleolithic Humans evolved in an active and very dynamic environment where we moved around for hours a day. Frankly, modern living is killing us and here’s some ammo for that argument:

The why of what we do is critical. Over the years, I’ve met with thousands of people who practice yoga, tai chi, and qi gong. These are people who are dedicated to their personal growth in some capacity and are doing a mind-body practice to fulfill their goals. Some do quite well, and others…well, frankly, others are lost and bored.

Lots of people get into the esoteric arts for good reasons but, sadly, they fail to learn the essence of the teachings and fall into rote practice. This can be the fault of many teachers out there. There’s tremendous downward-bearing force out there as yoga classes tend to fill up with people who keep it “fun” or play great music. In general, there’s usually a stampede of unaware people coming into the arts who are only comfortable with a certain degree of transformation and teachers who make a living at this end up playing to the masses.

The practices of Qi Gong (qigong) and Tai Chi (taichi) are ancient forms of energy yoga that are designed to circulate the life’s breath or life force throughout the meridian systems of the body.  Qi Gong (qigong) literally translates as “energy work” while Tai Chi Chuan means “Grand Ultimate Fist” which is a martial art based on energy dynamics.  The commonality is that they both circulate energy via the meridian system. In both systems, the practitioner is to focus their mind and their breath down to the lower dantien which is a point about three inches below the navel.

Stress, anxiety, and depression are all symptoms of disconnection to our inner source of peace and tranquility. Here, Pedram discusses how it is through our loss of connection with nature that we have become fixated on abstract concepts and separated ourselves from our original connection with nature.

The founder of the Tao Tan Pai Lineage

Master Lu

One week has not gone by when, upon finding out I teach Qi Gong, I am asked “Is that like Tai Chi?”  The answer is- yes, kind of.  Here’s the scoop folks:

Qi Gong literally translates to “energy work”.  It is the ancient Asian practice of energy cultivation and breath work.  Known as a form of yoga, the practice of Qi Gong comes in many forms- some seated, some in deep stances, and others looking more like self massage.  There are literally thousands of traditions practicing different forms of Qi Gong out there.  Many of them come from health and healing practices while others from martial arts lineages.  Why martial arts?  Easy- let’s cultivate your internal energy, strengthen your vital flow, refine your focus, and teach you to project that power out of your palms and into that guy.  Yeah- you see it in the Kung Fu movies all the time.

What else are these Qi Gong people doing? (more…)
